Job Summary

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) is responsible for providing assistance and support to physically disabled adults and elderly clients with activities of daily living, ensuring their comfort, safety, and well-being. The PSW will work in various settings including long-term care facilities and individual clients' homes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Care:

    • Assist clients with personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
    • Aid clients with mobility and transferring, including lifting and positioning.
    • Provide assistance with feeding and ensure proper nutrition and hydration.
    • Monitor and report changes in clients' physical or mental health to the clinical supervisor.
    • Promote clients' independence, dignity, and respect.
  • Household Management:

    • Perform light housekeeping duties including cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation.
    • Ensure a safe and clean living environment for clients.
    • Report any unsafe conditions or concerns in the client's home.
  • Health Monitoring:

    • Assist with medication reminders and administration as directed.
    • Perform routine health checks and document observations.
    • Respond to medical emergencies and administer first aid as needed.
  • Emotional and Social Support:

    • Engage clients in social and recreational activities to promote mental well-being.
    • Provide companionship and emotional support.
    • Encourage clients to participate in community activities and events.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Personal Support Worker Certificate or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Experience:

    • Previous experience working in long-term care facilities and individual homes is preferred.
  • Skills and Abilities:

    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
    • Ability to work effectively with trans-disciplinary teams, clients, and their families.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality customer service.
    • Proficiency in using MS Office and Internet/email applications.
  • Certifications:

    • Valid CPR and First Aid certification (HCP level).
    • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge:

    • Understanding of conditions affecting physical abilities such as Multiple Sclerosis, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.

Working Conditions

    • Work in various settings including clients' homes, long-term care facilities, and community environments.
    • Exposure to different household conditions and varying levels of cleanliness.
  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength, such as lifting and transferring clients.
    • Capability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods.
